Wajarri Holdings

Wajarri Holdings is an earth moving company in the civil and mining industry established in 2008. Co-Founder and Director Gavin Egan spent many years shearing all over Australia before seeing the opportunity to create a business that could connect an Indigenous workforce with country in a growing industry sector.

Creating Local Jobs

“Most Wajarri people who could work in civils and mining had to go to the Pilbara as work wasn’t being offered to Wajarri people locally,” Gavin said. “I could see the opportunity to train and retain staff locally in the civil and mining sector, and the SKAO project would bring additional opportunities to the local community.”

Gavin attended the early conferences at which the SKAO project was first promoted as a possibility. Gavin was also one of three Wajarri people to attend a conference in Cape Town as part of Australia’s delegation representing the bid to have the SKAO located in the Murchison region of WA.

Introducing Gavin and Stuart from Wajarri Holdings

With grandson Stuart Egan now taking the role of Managing Director at Wajarri Holdings, the company is well placed to provide more employment opportunities to Wajarri and other Indigenous Australians.

Wajarri Holdings currently employs 21 people, the majority of whom are working on the SKAO site. Works at SKAO commenced in May 2023 with the workforce at Wajarri Holding growing by 15 employees or subcontractors since that time.

“Wajarri people are given every opportunity to be employed by Wajarri Holdings,” Stuart Egan commented. “This is a value my grandfather established and something I want to continue long into the future.”

Creating Sustainability

Stuart’s primary focus is securing ongoing works that ensures Wajarri Holdings can build on its 15 years in business and create long term sustainable jobs and opportunities for Wajarri people.

Currently in the company fleet is a Water Truck, 30-tonne excavator and a 966 Cat Loader (all owned) with additional plant hired as needed to fulfill contract works. The company is planning on the purchase of a Grader in the New Year to further bolster its capabilities.

Stuart has high aspirations for Wajarri Holdings with an aim to build the business not just to a high standard of operations in WA, but recognised as a leading provider of civil & mining services throughout Australia.

“We have a proven track record to partner and will continue to explore Joint-Venture partnerships wherever they exist throughout Australia, provided they create more opportunities for Wajarri or other Indigenous Australians,” Stuart said.
